Company History

Platt Security was founded by Robert “Bob” Platt in 1958. Bob was a Police Sergeant for the City of Long Beach assigned to the Vice Division. The Chief of Police asked if he could handle security for public events held at the old Long Beach Municipal Auditorium. Bob put together a group of off duty police officers to work concerts, roller derbies and other public events, and Platt Security was born. In 1962, the Long Beach Arena was opened and Platt Security began providing security for major sporting events, concerts, and trade shows. In the mid-seventies, a convention center was added to the Long Beach Arena and Platt Security was contracted to handle all security for the facility for over fifteen years. The Long Beach Convention Center was home to major concerts for Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, the Rolling Stones, and The Grateful Dead to name a few. Platt Security handled security for concerts, trade shows, public events, the Civic Light Opera, and other cultural events.

In the early seventies, Marc Platt joined his father at Platt Security. Following in his father’s footsteps, Marc began a career with the Long Beach Police Department in 1975, working assignments in both patrol and detectives. He continued working part time at Platt until 1992 when he retired from the police department and took on a full time position assisting his father with the management of Platt Security.

In 1975, Platt Security entered into a contract with the Long Beach Grand Prix to provide security for the race. Platt Security provided the security for the Grand Prix for the next ten years. Marc Platt is the current Director of Security for the Long Beach Grand Prix. Marc’s expertise in race security has made him a much sought-after consultant for events of this type. He has designed and implemented security programs for over eighty races in the United States and Canada.

In 1989, Platt Security was contacted by the City of Long Beach and the United States Department of Urban Development. We were asked to design a community orientated security program for the Springdale Apartments in Long Beach. After two years of hard work by all parties, Springdale was awarded the Helen Putman Award for successful rehabilitation of a property overrun with gangs and drugs. The Springdale program is now used by HUD as a nationwide model.

In 1992, Platt Investigations was established. Licensed by the State of California, Platt Investigations is a full service Investigation firm providing services to attorneys, corporations, and individuals with a wide range of investigators specializing in all areas of investigations. Our investigators are former, or currently employed, law enforcement officers with experience in all areas of criminal and civil investigations. We maintain an extensive network of information sources along with skilled researchers which, coupled with tenacious and skilled investigators, enables us to succeed where others fail.

In the mid-nineties, Platt Security started their private patrol program, which offers around the clock patrol to private residences and businesses in the Long Beach area. This program was designed to work in conjunction with standard police services for those who desired or needed extra patrol service. This program was met with great response from the communities we served. To date we have over 500 patrol clients in the Southern California area. Developing a good working relationship with the residents and merchants in the communities we serve is the cornerstone of our services.

In 1996, we added Platt Security Systems, a full service alarm, video, and access control company. We wanted to offer our customers a complete security package allowing one company to be able to handle all of their security needs. To date we have over a thousand alarm customers and have installed hundreds of video surveillance and access control systems.

In 2005, Platt Security was contacted by the Housing Services Bureau of the Department of Community Development, City of Long Beach, to provide a security program for the newly formed, Andy Street Multi Family Improvement Business District. The district consists of apartments on Andy Street, and local businesses in north Long Beach. The District is the first of its kind in the nation. The program has been extremely successful and we have been able to reduce police calls for service by over eighty percent and greatly improve the quality of life in the area.

Platt Security has developed, and strives to maintain, a great working relationship with law enforcement agencies in the areas we work. The information exchange between the police and Platt Security personnel have proven to be beneficial to all parties. Our personnel, due to their daily contact with residents and merchants, often obtain information the police are not aware of, in turn, the police relay pertinent crime and suspect information to our personnel. Law enforcement agencies have realized that a working relationship with our professionally trained personnel is as valuable to them as it is to us.

We provide security programs to over twenty residential communities, in eight cities, throughout Southern California. We patrol these locations by vehicle, golf cart, bike, and on foot, as requested. We find that vehicle, golf cart, and bike patrols are highly visible and allow our personnel freedom of movement throughout the locations. Foot patrols encourage the one-on-one contact that is so important in developing strong community ties. Most recently, Platt Security was awarded contracts to patrol fifteen residential communities for the Irvine Company, and the Magnolia Industrial Group District, which comprises a large area of residential, retail, and industrial districts.

Essential to our program is involvement in community programs, meetings, job fairs, and activities. Platt Security’s makes every effort to have representatives attend these functions, providing the community an opportunity to express their suggestions and complaints in person. Many suggestions have been helpful in dealing with problems that our personnel encounter. Personal contact helps build a trusting relationship with the community.

As you see, Platt Security is not a typical standing guard type security company. We have built our company and our reputation on providing professionally trained personnel for high profile assignments with public interaction. We work in areas with a wide range of economic and social demographics. Our programs and clients require our personnel to possess tact and diplomacy as well as the ability and training to react appropriately to situations and/or problems.
